Thermostatic Expansion Valve (TX Valve)

The most commonly used device in commercial refrigeration and air conditioning due to its characteristics. It responds to changes in temperature and pressure in the refrigeration system. It has the ability for mechanical adjustment of the superheat coefficient. Its main role is to control the superheated vapor on the suction side of the system and at the outlet of the evaporator. Correct and proper adjustment after the installation or repair of the refrigeration system ensures the operation of the evaporator at full capacity. Therefore, it controls and processes the relationship between the liquid refrigerant in the evaporator and the superheated vapor of the refrigerant that leaves the evaporator further into the low-pressure suction side.


The basic functioning principle of the TX valve is determined by the use of three pressures:


  • Pressure in the bulb of the valve (P1)

  • Pressure in the evaporator (P2)

  • Spring pressure (P3)






P1 is the force opening the valve (for a higher flow rate of liquid fluid). P2 and P3 act as forces tending to close the valve (lower fluid flow).

As a result, the functioning of the TX valve can be described as the difference between P1 and P2.

Equilibrium is an expression that describes a state where P1 = P2 + P3. When the compressor is running, the valve is open. The evaporator load determines how much liquid refrigerant passes through the TX valve (depending on the degree of valve opening).
